Harlequin II - painting process

Step 1

First wash looks great!

Step 2

Used opaque projector
to help draw in figure.
Not very clear.

Step 3

Redrew figure, using
enlarged photocopies
(traced) to get shapes
in place. Note masking
tape covering too-long
thigh on left knee.

Step 4

Developing face
looks good. Like
figure's pants.

Step 5

Scrubbed out diamonds
on raised knee.

Step 6

Redrew folded leg and
scrubbed out tights. Decided I needed to use the whole paper -- had used the left edge to demonstrate technique.

Step 7

Scrubbed out left edge. Put black shape in front of left knee to hide messy too-long thigh. Redrew right shoulder. Note pencil marks from previous drawing attempts.

Step 8

Added triangle pattern behind figure and wine "swoops."

Step 9

Planning rest of background area. Adjusting value on shirt sleeve.

Step 10

Added 3 or 4 glazes to darken left background. Planned placement of triangles.

Step 11

More adjusting: sleeve, wine swoop, background.

Final image

Final adjustments: background, wine swoop, top of swoop near face, hat band. DONE!
